You just have to be wary of where you buy. Posted 7 Jun I have read a lot about the Hartz IV and am very confused. I am only considering these benefits on a temporary basis until I get established. My 1st question is: Am I eligible for any of the benefits should my American wife and I decide to live in Germany? You go to the Arbeitsamt and list yourself as "looking for work" and ask what you are entitled to.
To get Hartz IV, I have heard that you need to turn over to them all your accounts, that they will not let you claim it if you have any money at all anywhere. I was told by a German that if you have retirement savings plans etc, you need to cash all that in before they will give you a cent. I don't know if that is true since I never tried to claim but it would also be hard for them to find all your money if you never lived in Germany. They do pay for bus passes for people who have to go because I saw classmates of mine at my German course turning over receipts to the teacher to get refunded for their bus passes.
Getting all this set up can take a while, it may be faster for you to just get a job. I got a job at a manpower place very easily. They gave me a contract right away with guaranteed 35 hrs. The work depends on what you can do. If they have nothing you can do, you can be a helper. The pay sucks but it's better than Hartz IV. The scheduling also sucks because if you are new, they will just give you whatever is left over.
Sometimes I don't know until the afternoon that I am working the next morning and where and sometimes I know by noon that I am working a late shift from pm that day. If I am lucky, I will have a plan for a week but at least it pays the rent while you look for something better or if you stay with it, it gets better because you'd get placed with a company and get a fixed schedule. Many Thanks for the reply, I hold a German Passport , I have 30 years in the fitness industry and work as a manager currently.
My German is lacking but is passable, so language classes are a must not only for me but my wife as well. Posted 20 Aug My work is a bit specialised and occasionally I need to travel outside Berlin and Germany to find more work. If you travel without approval, and do not prove it is work related, they can dock your benefits.
They consider travel a red flag. My husband had to get permission to travel even for job interviews, and was told he could not do any traveling non work related. My husband had to get permission to travel even for job interviews, and was told he could do any traveling non work related. My first post was missing a word, my bad.
He was told he Can NOT travel without pre-approval, and only if work related. The way they see it, if you can afford to travel you do not need hartz4. They do allow instances for work, but again only preapproved. And in many cases such as interviews they will even pay the travel costs. If they said that you cannot leave berlin, they are not likely to say have fun in Paris. In other words when in the hands of hartz4, they have your nuts in a vice grip.
I would never tell anyone not to take Hartz IV, because you need the money, and Berlin is well not a place where work is not easy to come by, and most of the work does not pay more than the money you get from Hartz IV. As someone who has gone between low paying work and unemployment, and vocational training, retraining and more low paying work in a cycle of general suffering.
I have to say hate Hartz IV, I feel like someone is holding a knife to me, when I am on it, sure maybe I am not starving in the street homeless like some in america, its more like I am have been sentenced to a prison in an marzahn apartment building. I am truly terrified of it, just the word unemployment and I feel a wave of sorrow and despair coming on.

Open your list. I would guess this would be classed as a boutique hotel and will be much better once the renovations were completed. The staff were great, the room was perfect and clean and the breakfast very good, the bar on the shore is a walk away provided a fantastic sunset. It is a luxury fot those who loves drinking tea all day long. Great staff. Anything past this point was very average. Bus station is near the hotel and usually we just walked to train station or city center.
The staff was obviously incredibly poorly trained and had no idea about customer service and other than the room, which was really nice, the hotel itself is very very below average. We arrived at 11pm to the hotel to be greated by a 'trainee manager' and a builder. We was given our room card for room 15, the suite.
We got to the room to find a double room, a fridge with half the stock already drank, no phone in the room and the small tablet underneath the tv didnt work and no on knew how to fix it.
Tips for low-earning freelancers…
The staff including the manager and owner were extremely unhelpful!!! We booked the hotel thinking it would be of boutique style within the city, the building and the main entrance was really nice. Parking difficult. A soul soothing alternative to those international hotel chains. Cosy interior. Good breakfast. Modern technology TV, tablet. Restaurants round the corner, beer at the water close. Both walking distance. The telephone receptionist did not speak english.

The location, it's wonderful to walk around by the Alster. Having to approach the night staff late at night with an urgent problem. They promptly dealt with and addressed my concern in a very helpful way. The location. The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. The style of the decor - especially of the later room I stayed in which I think appeared to have a more authentic and older feel which I felt was more in keeping with building and the neighbourhood.
Room was very dusty. View of the back was not the best. The window in the room was open so the room was full of bugs and mosquitos. The breakfast and the stuff. The Staircase made squeaky noise as we walked up and down.. Helpful and friendly staff, breakfast was very good and the lady at breakfast was attentive and kind. The great location for runners to run all round the Alster lake 7.
The blankets were a little old and crappy, view of garden was of a trash heap I think due to construction.

Some staff was lovely, some not very competent. Beautiful old building right on the water. The hotel need some maintenance. Everything is great. Very friendly and supportive staff Excellent location close to the centre but quiet and directly on the Alster with a wonderful view. Rooms spacious and nicely furnished. All good. Classic Hotel, includes breakfast and dog is allowed to stay. I arrived late in the evening and had to get up early. Unfortunately I noticed too late the room was not heated. So I could not fall asleep for quite some time due to my cold feet.
A cold room might be a bonus when travelling with a partner;-. Street parking. Can be difficult to find parking space nearby. Nice location at Alster lake, short walk along the lake to city center.
Nice morning run around the lake. Very friendly staff at reception. Breakfast included; nothing spectacular, but decent. Error: Please enter a valid email address. Error: Oops! An error has occurred.
